The Sant'Anna School offers a PhD in Economics and a PhD in Management which enroll approximately 5-6 and 10-12 students per year, respectively. EMbeDS supports scholarships in the 34th (2018-19), 35th (2019-20), 36th (2020-21) and 37th (2021-22) cycles of these programs. Both the PhD in Economics and the PhD in Management have been classified as “innovative" and "international” by ANVUR. Doctoral theses produce high-profile international publications and the placement of graduates is outstanding (e.g., Paris I Sorbonne, The New School for Social Research NYC, University of Maastricht, Universidad de Buenos Aires, London School of Economics, Harvard Business School, University of Oxford, Banca Centrale Europea, OECD, UBS, Inter-American Development Bank, Manchester Business School, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Lancaster University Business School, University College of London, European Commission). In recent years we granted two important PhD in Economics Honoris Causa -- to Joseph E. Stiglitz (May 2017), the 2001 Nobel price in Economics, and to Mario Draghi (November 2018), the current Prime Minister of Itay and prior head of the European Central Bank.
The Sant'Anna School is also part of the consortium PhD in Data Science, which has enrolled approximately 9-10 students per year between 2017 and 2020 (in addition to Sant'Anna the consortium includes the Scuola Normale Superiore, administering the program, the University of Pisa, CNR and the IMT of Lucca). EMbeDS supports scholarships in the 34th (2018-19), 35th (2019-20) and 36th (2020-21) cycles of this program. The PhD in Data Science has been classified as both "innovative" and "interdisciplinary" by ANVUR, and is part of an effort to increase interdisciplinary research through a focus on big data-driven domain applications and methods for big data analysis. In the Fall of 2020 members of the EMbeDS community led an application by the Sant’Anna School to become part of PhD-AI.it, a novel nation-wide initiative sponsored by MUR and CNR. PhD-AI.it will offer five doctoral programs, each coordinated by a different university and comprising a different cluster of partner and affiliate institutions. In the Spring of 2021, Sant'Anna has become a partner of the PhD Artificial Intelligence & Society, coordinated by the University of Pisa. This program will, in effect, subsume and expand the PhD in Data Science starting with the 37th cycle.
